Over the past year, I've had the honor of working with composer Clare Martin on a commissioned piece for my junior recital on May 1, 2022 at 1 pm. (livestream link coming soon!) After working with them so closely, I would love for people to get to know some more about them and their music. The following are notes and some facts about Martin's musical journey as well as their new piece for percussion duo titled Bubbled Daydreams.
Clare Martin is a junior music composition major at Ithaca College from Gaithersburg, Maryland. They got into composition through piano lessons with Donna Koh, where they've always loved "'doodling' at the piano and making things up much more than practicing," Martin also adds that they were fortunate to have a "wonderful teacher who encouraged [their] creativity," and humorously jokes "even when [they] didn’t practice [their] scales." Some of their other favorite musical experiences include playing trombone as part of their high school's jazz ensemble and marching band. They also state that as a composer, they are inspired by "late romantic and 20th century composers, and from video game scores such as The Legend of Zelda, Skyrim, and many others. [They're] also inspired by [their] friends, family, and teachers past and present." They are also currently a member of the Ithaca College Concert Band and Trombone Troupe.
Martin also provided the following notes for their piece Bubbled Daydreams:
My piece, Bubbled Daydreams, came to fruition when my good friend Ethan Pinckert commissioned me to write a piece based on a childhood experience. Most summers as a child I spent long days at the nearby pool; as an avid swim team member (Go Westleigh Barracudas!) A typical day for me was showing up for 8 am practice and then sticking around afterwards for as long as I fancied, sometimes until they kicked me out at 9 pm. I remember on very crowded days I’d sometimes get sick of all the noise, and sit at the bottom of the pool for as long as I could hold my breath just to drown it all out for a minute and think. I’ve also had tinnitus, a ringing in my ear, since a young age; so these little moments of escape consisted of my daydreams, the sound of water, and an ever present Eb drone. The purpose of Bubbled Daydreams is to see if I can bring this moment to all of you, and I hope you enjoy it.
Catch the world premiere of Bubbled Daydreams at Ithaca College's Hockett Family Recital Hall on Sunday May 1, 2022 at 1 pm, or tune in via livestream.
Special thanks to Clare Martin for providing this information and all their efforts in this commission!
